Back to School Dates and other Important Upcoming Dates

Rebel Camp     (Check the link to the right for more information)

The Class of 2023 is formally invited to attend Freeman’s Freshmen Orientation, which we call “Rebel Camp!”  This event will be held from 8:30 – 12:30 at Freeman High School on Thursday, August 22nd.  we have more than 300 rising 9th grade students attend each year and I sincerely hope that every member of the incoming freshmen class will be there.  Sign up to attend: REBEL CAMP SIGN UP FORM

Laptop and Schedule Open Houses: (Formerly known as “Fee Night”)

Instead of an intense 2-hour event, we will open our doors for several days to distribute laptops, share schedules and collect fees for those unable to pay online.  Our hope is that by being open all day, we may avoid the long lines and occasional frustration that came with Fee nights in the past.  If you can pay and complete forms online, this will greatly improve our chances of reaching this goal and reduce wait-times considerably.

Open House (formerly Fee nights) Schedule:

  • Pre-paid (online) day: Wednesday, 8/21, 9 am – 5pm (Tip: avoid 9 and noon crowds if possible)
    • Note: schedules for those who pre-paid will be emailed to parents on Friday, 8/23.
  • Freshmen: Thursday, 8/22, 1pm – 3pm (after Rebel Camp)
  • 10-12th Grade In-person Day: Friday, 8/23, 9am – 6pm (Tip: avoid the 5pm crowds if possible)

AP Writing Workshop:

  • Thursday, 8/22:

For those signed up for some specific AP courses, we hold an optional workshop to develop writing skills to help prepare for the school year.  Use the link that follows to sign up for your sessions: https://tinyurl.com/yy88lpwa

Back to School Night:

  • Monday, 9/16

Senior Convocation:

  • Wednesday October 16

New Schedule and Volunteer Opportunities

As we mentioned earlier this Spring, the county will be going to a unified bell schedule for this school year, which means Freeman will adopt a different bell schedule.  Students will visit 4 of their classes each day on a rotating Day1/Day2 schedule.  The new schedule also features a school-wide “Directed Study” period where students can work on assignments, get help from teachers, attend club meetings, and/or make up assignments from excused absences.  Teachers have been preparing for this shift in schedules this summer and I look forward to fewer classes each day, fewer homework assignments each evening, a smooth transition from middle school, and an opportunity for deeper learning in longer class periods.  Freeman’s 2019-2020 regular bell schedule is below for your planning purposes.

2019 – 2020 Douglas Freeman High School Bell Schedules

Parents

We need help at our Laptop and Schedule Open Houses (see above).  We could use support from parents as greeters, guides, or with help distributing laptops and keeping the day running smoothly.  We will work in shifts during the 3-days (August 22-23).  I’ve asked the PTSA to help, so look for messaging from them to volunteer.

  • August 22:  1 – 3 pm
  • August 23: shifts available from 9 – 6 pm

Students

There are several events this summer that could use student-volunteer help, and students can receive community service hours towards their graduation seal.

  • August 1 – Children’s summer camp support. Freeman is host to a 1-day summer camp for teacher’s children from ages 1-13 and we are in need of high school students to serve as “camp counselors” during this event.  No training required, but prefer those who like working with young kids.  Interested students can email Carter Reilly (csreilly@henrico.k12.va.us).
    • Time:  8:30 – 2 on Thursday, 8/1.
  • August 20, 21, 22 – Back to School Open Houses.  We could use support from parents as greeters, guides, or with help distributing laptops and keeping the day running smoothly.  Email Mr. Sanders tssanders@henrico.k12.va.us if you are interested in volunteering for these events.

“Meet the New Principal” Events and New Faces

As I mentioned in my first correspondence in May, among my most important early priorities is to listen.  To that end, I’ve met with nearly every member of my staff in individual meetings, hosted parent coffee events, and worked closely with our PTSA since stepping into this role.  As another year approaches and we move back into school mode, I wanted to use the next month to hear from as many community members as possible.  Please consider stopping by one of the following “Meet the New Principal” events.  These are “meet and greets” where I’ll be meeting parents, students, alumni and friends of the school, listening, sharing my vision for the school, and we will discuss Freeman now and in the future. You can stop in, join the conversation for a while, ask anything you want, or share your perspective of our great school. The events will be informal and you can stay as long as you want.

Meet the New Principal Event Schedule:

  • Monday, August 5th: Tuckahoe Library (4:30 – 6pm)
  • Thursday, August 8th: Regency Starbucks (10-11am)
  • Tuesday, August 13th : Tuckahoe YMCA (6-8pm)
  • Friday, August 23rd: Freeman High School Library (10am – 12)

New Faces:

  • Associate Principal: Rick Butler, Caseload: A-D
Mr. Butler joined our administrative team this summer, transferring from Henrico High School where he spent 4 years, three as the Associate Principal, the position he will hold at Freeman.  Rick previously served as an assistant principal at Tucker High School and a school counselor and math teacher prior to that.  Rick brings a wealth of experience, a ton of energy and a remarkable warmth to our school; we are lucky to have snagged him for our team. Welcome aboard Rick!
  •  Assistant Principal: To be announced in August
It is better-sweet to report that Assistant Principal Queen Bailey has moved up to Central Office as a part of our division’s student support and disciplinary review office. Mrs. Bailey served Freeman High School for 4 years and we are sorry to see her go but excited for her and her family to have this professional opportunity.  We will be announcing the strong replacement as our new assistant principal very shortly and that individual will work with students whose last name begins with R-Z.
  • Coordinator of Assessment and Remediation: Carter Reilly

Another familiar face in a new role is Mrs. Carter Reilly, who will move from Latin teacher to our testing coordinator.  Mrs. Reilly has been an important member of the Freeman faculty for ten years and is excited to step into her new role coordinating our testing and remediation programming.  You may interact with her as it pertains to your child’s graduation or testing requirements over the coming years.

  • School Counselor: Susie Good, Caseload – Last Names Li-Pe
Susie Good comes to us from Hermitage High School where she was a stand-out member of their department for years. We are lucky she has chosen to join our team and we will benefit from her experience and skills as a working with students and families.
  • School Counselor: Charlie Williams, Caseload – Last Name Sc-Z
Mr. Williams has been with us for almost a year, first as an intern, then a board substitute, before applying for and earning a full time position on our team.  We are excited that Charlie and Susie are full-time members of the Freeman Family as they replace retiring counselors Beth Metcalf and Kevin Steele. The changes in our counseling team as well as regular enrollment number changes lead to a slight adjustment of our counseling caseload assignments.  Your child is assigned to one of the following school counselors based on where his or her last name falls alphabetically:

School Counselor Assignments:

Student Last Name School Counselor
A – B Ms. Renee Ferrell
C-Gh Ms. Morgan Meadowes
Gi – Lh Ms. Janet Rost Smith
Li – Pe Ms. Susie Good
Pe – Sa Ms. Liz Puckett
Sc-Z Mr. Charlie Williams
